How to Be a Good Hospice Volunteer

There are many reasons why someone wants to volunteer for hospice care in Kansas. Volunteering can be a way to show gratitude to those who received the same kind of help, while others volunteer as a means to put meaning in their lives.

No matter the reason, hospice volunteers, like any home health aide, are important members of the hospice care team. Their support can make a difference in the dying patient’s life and their families’ lives too.

A good hospice volunteer shows their support by providing emotional and physical assistance to the patient and their family. They also comfort them during the family’s challenging times. To be a good and effective hospice volunteer, they provide the following to the patient and their families:

  • Companionship
Patients in hospice care are most likely already in the final stages of their lives, and some of them do not have family members by their side. As a volunteer, you may be the only person that they can talk to.
  • Life reviews
Offering emotional, spiritual, and social support is one of the duties of a volunteer. Hospice volunteers must always be ready to lend a listening ear to patients.
  • Meal Preparation
Although this task is mostly done in home health in Wichita, Kansas, hospice volunteers can assist in light meal preparation for the seniors in hospice care.

These are only some of the things that volunteers do in hospice care. If you would like to become a volunteer, you are welcome to apply at Sunflower Home Health & Hospice.
